A new work that evolved from an invitation to the Alexandria-born artist Mona Marzouk. The site specific mural in this gallery is an amalgam of forms in past works by the artist, and references to this exhibition.

The work is rendered as a museum within the museum. Emulating the language of museological display in the Alexandria: Past Futures exhibition, Marzouk creates a haunting dream-like environment in which she comes up with shapes that are familiar yet entirely foreign all at once. Commenting on the work’s title she explains “It refers to the work being both an apparatus for showcasing the rest of the exhibition and a series of forms that can be considered independently.” Marzouk’s signature style and methods are a continuous striving for perfection in form. Her aesthetic systems are built on a rich repository of references and forms in the artist’s ever-expanding archive of unfamiliar things that lean into the futuristic and mythological spaces that compel the viewer to question any sense of the familiar. Her long standing interest in architectural histories is encoded in this new work, which references her practice across painting, sculpture and murals. Apparatus and Form is a testament to the artist’s interest in diffusing the boundaries of time, of past, present and future, deconstruction binaries through addressing our perception and how we see things: the human-made and the natural, the biomorphic and the geometric.
