BARK is a series of paintings forging a connection between minimalism in art and virtual reality technology. BARK builds on a particular strand in previous projects in which the history of objects is studied and their future speculated on to construct images that become unlikely routes to a cultural investigation of the past and future melded into one.

Along this line, BARK uses the humble tree trunk to think about the spectacular implications and effects of virtual reality (VR) and how it connects to nature and the way humans envision their direct surroundings. Everyday experience of reality seems effortless, but this is only because of how our brains produce a kind of virtual reality along with a sense of time in our heads; neuroscience and physics have been getting better at explaining such processes over the past half-century. VR has hooked up with this research producing alternate experiences in the world of gaming now becoming an integral part of what has been called ‘the experience economy’. The tree trunk with its evocation of a primal image of human interaction with nature - sparks lighting up fire - is in one sense the materialistic antithesis of what the VR economy hinges itself on, immaterial and out of body experiences. The paintings synthesize these two moments of technological history.
